The plans for the creation of an Engineering School date back to the beginnings of 1974. The materialization of the idea starts gradually in 1990, with the establishment of the departments that now constitute the School, as shown in the timeline below. The School of Engineering was finally founded in 2017, with the departments of a) Architecture, b) Computer Science & Engineering and c) Materials Science and Engineering. In Oct. 2018, the School was augmented with the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The Department of Computer Science is officially founded.
The Department of Computer Science begins its academic operation and welcomes its first students.
The Department of Materials Science & Technology is officially founded and begins its academic operation, welcoming its first students.
The Department of Materials Science and Technology gets renamed to Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and operates a 5-year undergraduate program.
The Department of Architecture is officially founded.
The Department of Computer Science evolves to Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and starts operating a 5-year undergraduate program.
The School of Architecture is officially founded with a single department: the Department of Architecture.
The Department of Architecture begins its academic operation and welcomes its first students.
The School of Engineering in the University of Ioannina is officially founded in February 2017 (L.4452/2017), encompassing the departments of Architecture, Materials Science & Engineering and Computer Science & Engineering, with the School of Architecture getting disestablished. The academic operation of the School begins in September 2017. Graduated students are accepted as full members of the Technical Chamber of Greece.
The Department of Mecahnical Engineering is officially founded (L.4559/2018).
